Lot 3613 FINE 19th CENTURY SIOUX QUILLED PIPE BAG.
32" including 10" ochre dyed fringe. Quill decorated panels on both sides, ribs, edges and cords. Cords have red feathered tinkle bell attachments. Interior has pasted acquisition number, a wax sealed tag with number "52" and "KIOWA PIPE BAG". This bag came from Fred Harvey (1835-1901) - Harvey Girls Restaurant, who was a massive collector of Southwest art and his collections are found at the Smithsonian and other institutions. Exceptional provenanced 19th century pipe bags from famous collections are rare, as vast majority have lost history and are merely decorative. We attribute this as being a Sioux crafted bag rather than Kiowa.
