This exceptionally well made solid silver presentation trowel is engraved "PRESENTED TO Saml. Melling Esq. J.P., OF WIGAN, ON HIS LAYING A MEMORIAL STONE AT THE EXTENSION OF THE WESLEYAN SCHOOLS, BLACKROD. AUG. 1ST. 1885.". The top of the trowel is also engraved with various foliate and scroll motifs. The underside of the trowel bears hallmarks dating the manufacture of the trowel is 1884-85 in London. The silversmith's touch mark is "GMJ". Smooth ivory handle. CONDITION: trowel shows very light wear. (02-26929/BF). NON-GUN. $250-400.
