^Lot 5264 HEAVY TAN COTTON OVERCOAT FROM THE 2ND HALF OF THE

19TH CENTURY. This interesting overcoat is hand sewn tan cotton canvas with a green, brown and tan striped cotton liner. The coat is constructed in a manner consistent to the 1850s and as late as the 1880s. Double breasted front has hand sewn button holes with five 1" dyed black horn buttons on each side. There is a flap pocket at the lower front of each side. The back has two buttons of similar design to the front. The interior has some quilting and is nearly fully lined with an early cotton plaid like material. The left sleeve has no lining, but the right sleeve retains a muslin lining that is stamped "M Grassler 290 W. Water St. Milwaukee.". Grassler was a noted costume house near the end of the 19th Century. It is possible Grassler's costume house, like many others purchased military and other uniforms for use by their business, hence the stamp in the sleeve. It is possible this coat had a military association during the Civil War, but it is also possible it was a tradesman's or teamsters coat. Irrespective of its original purpose or owner, it ended up in the stocks of Grassler Customs. CONDITION: the coat is substantially solid, but does show staining, loose seams, small tears, and general hard use. All buttons are present. Markings are clear. (02-27197/BF). NON-GUN. $1,000-2,000.
