^Lot 4333 RARE SPRINGFIELD 1871 WARD-BURTON SADDLE RING

CARBINE. Cal. 50 CF. It is estimate that approx 315 carbines were mfg by Springfield Armory in 1871. It is an early bolt action single shot design which self cocks when the bolt is closed. It is fitted with a 22" bbl with iron block front sight. and ladder adj rear sight. The rec rail is marked with the Springfield Eagle next to "U.S. / SPRINGFIELD 1871". The top of the bolt is marked "WARD BURTON PATENT/ / DEC/ 20/ 1859 FEC 21. 1871". The carbine stock is held with a single spring held bbl band. The left side of the stock has a saddle ring bar and ring. A mostly legible oval ESA inspector cartouche from Erskine S. Allen, Springfield's chief ordnance inspector is found on the stock behind the saddle ring bar. A small serif P final inspection is found behind the trigger guard. CONDITION: Overall good. The metal surfaces have been cleaned over fine pitting with some traces of blue found on the rec in the protected areas. The stock is very fine with some denting around the ESA cartouche and vivid final inspection stamp. The oil finish is good and there is some chipping around the buttplate.
