Lot 15 Jake Magera Custom Hatchet
This one-of-a-kind hatchet was hand-forged by Jake Magera, a third-generation farrier and blacksmith from Bluffdale, Utah.
Designed with intention, heritage, and backcountry function in mind, this piece blends traditional craftsmanship with a deep respect for American history and the outdoors.
Inspired by an image found in a Teddy Roosevelt-era hunting book—where a guide carried a simple, purpose-built hatchet—this design was reimagined to honor the 250th anniversary of the United States. Every detail was considered, from weight and balance to field usability and carry system.
The head is forged from a 1978 Camaro leaf spring (S7 spring steel), oil-quenched and tempered for exceptional strength, edge retention, and durability. The handle is 14” fire-cured hickory, finished with linseed oil for long-lasting protection and a classic feel in hand.
The ambidextrous sheath system allows for flexible carry on either side of a belt or pack, making it equally suited for backcountry travel, camp use, or display as a functional work of art.
A tribute to American craftsmanship—much like the muscle cars that inspired its steel—this piece reflects a time when durability, performance, and pride in domestic materials were non-negotiable.
