Lot 1217 WWI THEMED OIL PAINTING AND SERVICE MEMENTO.
1) A poignant WWI view of 2 British soldiers in a war torn landscape. 1 Soldier comforts his wounded and possibly dying friend among a foreground of equipment, bullet casings and dropped cartridges all flanked by a Lee Enfield rifle with fixed bayonet. The painting has a dark and muted palate typical of WWI scenes. The impasto is sparse and slight but the topography of the underlying canvas is readily apparent. The work is signed in the lower left "G. E. Cooke 1918". Sight size is 18" x 12 1/4" and the frame measures 24" x 18". CONDITION: painting is quite nice with only 2 minute pinprick losses. The frame shows significant wear to the edges. 2) A fine polychromatic soldier's service memento featuring flags and an American eagle around a central oval photo of the soldier. The plinth at the base identifies the soldier as Wagoner Herbert H Murray of the 103rd Field Artillery Supply Company of the 26th Division. The oak frame measures 23" x 17". CONDITION: light wear overall. The photo has become detached but could easily be reattached. (02-26385/BF). NON-GUN. $300-500.
