Lot 3347 GAR MEDAL, LETTERS AND PHOTOS RELATING TO MEDAL OF
HONOR RECIPIENT CAPT W. W. BLACKMAR.
This archive like lot contains a large cased bronze desk medal for the 1905 Denver GAR reunion. This is the first medal struck and was given posthumously to Capt Blackmar. Included is the original presentation letter to Blackmar's widow from Louis Sholes. The group contains several photos of Blackmar at various ages as well as photos of his family and a variety of relations. There are also several hand written letters from Blackmar to his mother that appear to be just before his military service began while he was attending Phillips Exeter Academy. Blackmar had a distinguished military career and was awarded the Medal of Honor for his heroism at the Battle of Five Forks. He served with distinction in the 15th Pennsylvania Cavalry and subsequently the 1st West Virginia Cavalry. He was the National Commander- in-Chief of the GAR from 1904 to 1905. Upon his death in 1905 he was only the second person to be honored by having his body lie in state at the Massachusetts State House.
