Lot 3236 U.S. SPRINGFIELD MODEL 1888 TRAPDOOR SINGLE SHOT
Cal. 45-70. S# 520529. Bbl. 32 1/2". Barrel is marked on left rear with "VP" eagle head proof. Rifle identified to Company A, 9th Infantry Regiment. This regiment, nicknamed the "Manchus" has a historic record in numerous American wars, including the Boxer Rebellion, which was the source of the nickname. "R" marked Buffington rear sight. Blade front sight. Replacement blade is likely from 1903A3 Springfield rifle. Low arch breech block dated "1878". Flat lockplate marked with "spread wing eagle" and "U.S. SPRINGFIELD". Three click tumbler. Rod bayonet measures 35 1/2". Threaded at the lower end. One piece trigger guard. Walnut stock is marked on the left side with crisp "SWP 1891" cartouche. Encircled script "P" proof under grip. Buttstock has faded period unit marking in white paint "43 / Co.A / 9TH". Comb is stamped ahead of buttplate tang "A9". Stock with two bands retained by springs. CONDITION: stock has moderate wear and handling marks while retaining a nice appearance in its original finish. Tiny crack behind tail of lockplate and small missing chips and small crack at the front of the trigger guard tang. Metal has turned overall patina with wear and spots of light oxidation. Bore has strong sharp lands with frosted grooves and occasional fine pitting. (01-28733/RW). ANTIQUE. $600-800.
