DOUBLE ACTION PERCUSSION POCKET REVOLVER. Cal. 31. S# 1. Bbl. 2 15/16". 1 of approx. 625 First Model Pocket revolvers mfg. by Josiah Ells from 1857-1859 (total production across all variations: 1,375). Left side of the hammer is marked "ELLS PATENT", with a crescent moon and "AUG.1. 1854" marked on the right. Sides of the frame area engraved with a shield surmounted by foliate scrollwork, with additional foliate scrollwork also engraved along the rear grip strap and around the circumference of the cyl. Frame is mounted with 2-piece plain wood grips, which exhibit a layer of added lacquer. Flattened brass bead front sight. All serialized parts are matching via "1" and include the frame (beneath right grip panel), mainspring, cyl. (rear face), bbl., as well as the grips (interior). CONDITION: metal components have faded to a mottled gray patina, exhibiting scattered superficial marks from handling and storage, as well as a layer of light lacquer overall. Dark bore, exhibiting consistent moderate pitting, while retaining fair rifling throughout. Proper manual mechanics. Grips show scattered marks and impressions from handling and storage, but otherwise remain sound. (01-28055/MLW). ANTIQUE. $1,200-1,800.
