Lot 811 Springfield 1873 Trapdoor .45-70 Gov't #360469

Springfield Model 1873 trapdoor with the 1879 improvements, including a ribbed trigger, thicker receiver, checkered hammer spur, and improved rear sight. US military single shot rifle manufactured circa 1887. It features 20.5" cut-down barrel with single brass band, blade front sight, modified rear sight, external hammer, straight gripped walnut stock, smooth curved steel buttplate marked "U.S.". The bore is dark, but the rifling looks sound. The metal finish shows rust and scratches with the remaining bluing being at approximately 40%. The buttplate shows rust and some dings. The stock and barrel have been shortened from its original configuration. The wood is otherwise in serviceable condition with normal handling marks from its era. Breech block is dated 1878. Barrel marked over chamber "V / P". Most observed markings are generally sharp edged. Left stock wrist has a feint "SWP' cartouche with what appears to be "1882," and a circled 'P' in script can be found on the bottom of the stock behind the trigger guard. The three cock hammer action also works well.
Condition is NRA Good.
