Lot 446 Mauser 98 Sporter 'Type B' .30-06 #57976

This is a very desirable pre-WWII deluxe Mauser "Type B Sporter" - a scarce factory built commercial sporter, not a conversion of a military rifle. This rifle is factory chambered for the .30-06 Springfield cartridge, the receiver is marked "U.S. 1906" to designate the chambering and also the roll mark Waffenfabrik Mauser Oberndorf a/n placing this rifle pre 1922 production. 24" barrel with express rear sight with one standing & one folding leaf (100, 200 meters) and matted ramp front with blade. Factory sling swivels with the forward swivel mounted on a barrel band. The magazine floorplate is hinged with push button release. The trigger guard and box magazine are machined from a single block of steel. The stock features a factory checkered rounded "Prince of Wales" pistol grip and schnabel forend tip. The barrel, bolt, receiver, bolt shroud, cocking, safety, extractor and bolt release have matching serial numbers. The right side of the buttstock is stamped with the Mauser banner and "U.S. 1906". The floorplate is stamped "Germany". Smooth steel butt plate. The receiver & lower have been drilled/tapped for optics, filler screws present. The bore is very good/bright, strong rifling, the action is smooth, original blue finish is about 80% with edge wear, handling wear on the bottom metal and a rub with some finish loss behind the rear sight. The stock is very good with some field marks, checkering at the wrist is still sharp and defined, shows some fiddle back. Fewer than 127,000 commercial Mauser rifles and actions were produced between 1898 and 1946. Markings are highlighted in white.
