Lot 263 Springfield 1884 Trapdoor .45-70 #426120

American made Model 1884, a U.S. military single-shot trapdoor rifle chambered for .45-70 Government, and manufactured in 1888. Older parts were often used during the manufacture of these rifles. Rifle features a blued finish, a 32-5/8" round barrel, 1873 breechblock, blade front sight, Buffington rear sight marked "R", M79 cleaning rod under barrel, sling swivels on barrel band and trigger guard, stacking swivel, serrated curved trigger, checkered hammer spur, and external hammer. The walnut furniture consists of a smooth straight gripped walnut stock, smooth forend, and smooth curved steel butt plate marked "U.S.". The original blued finish retained is about 10% and looks to have been cleaned of its original finish. Metal displays rust on the barrel band, butt plate, trigger, and trigger guard. Metal also shows some light pitting, but there is no observed deformation. Bore is very good with decent rifling, but shows some pitting. Wood is good with some small handling blemishes, and a crack in the shoulder stock. Barrel markings are no longer legible, and no stock cartouche was observed. The action is smooth and crisp with the three-cock hammer working well. Comes with a correct, original M1887 leather sling.
Condition is NRA Fair to Good.
