Lot 111 Art Holly Flintlock Rifle .45 Cal NVSN
Beautiful custom made Pennsylvania flintlock rifle. Made by master rifle maker Arthur "Art" Waldo Holly (1903-1974), of Michigan, he is known for his workmanship making every part himself, including the inlays, except the barrel, by hand. The rifle was made for Rolland Pratt of Lansing, Michigan. Built in the York/Bedford County style of Pennsylvania. Measures 58" overall with a 42" octagonal barrel, dovetailed brass blade front fixed notch rear sights, barrel is marked "A Holly". Beautiful tiger-striped Maple stock with relief hand carved floral/scroll designs on the buttstock and wrist, double set trigger, All the inlays and fittings are German silver including the patch box, buttplate, fore tip and triggerguard. all are hand engraved with floral/scroll designs. The inlay on the cheek rest is engraved with an American Eagle with spread wings, German silver inlay on the barrel flat is engraved "R. Pratt", oval disc on top of the wrist is engraved "R P" and the escutcheon opposite the lock is engraved with floral designs with "R. Pratt, AWH" . The side lock is engraved "RP". Metal tipped striped wooden ramrod. The two-cock hammer action action performs excellent. The rifled bore is excellent, finishes are excellent and the wood is overall excellent with one small above the rear side-plate where the hammer comes in contact with when cocked.
