Lot 17 1908 ST. GAUDENS “NO MOTTO” ROUGH RIDER HOARD GOLD DOUBLE EAGLE
This spectacular 1908 $20 Gold Double Eagle contains nearly one full ounce of gold and represents one of the
most iconic pieces in American numismatics. Directly inspired by President Theodore Roosevelt, whose
legacy is deeply rooted in conservation, the outdoors, and the founding of the National Parks System, this
coin is a fitting tribute to his influence.
Roosevelt famously believed America’s coinage was dull and unworthy of the nation it represented.
Determined to elevate its artistry, he enlisted the era’s premier sculptor, Augustus Saint-Gaudens, to redesign
the nation’s gold coins. The result was the Saint-Gaudens Double Eagle, widely regarded as the most
beautiful U.S. coin ever minted.
No Motto Variety: This example is the desirable No Motto type, produced only in 1907 and early 1908. These
coins were struck without the phrase “In God We Trust.” Roosevelt felt that placing the motto on currency -
often used for less-than-noble purposes - bordered on sacrilege. Public outcry viewed its absence as a
challenge to Christian values, and the motto was added later in 1908, making the No Motto pieces a shortlived and historically significant subtype.
Grading & Quality: Certified MS65+ by PCGS, the industry’s most respected grading service, this coin ranks
as a true Gem. On the 70-point grading scale, MS65 represents exceptional preservation and eye appeal. The
“+” designation indicates the coin sits at the high end of that grade—superior even among Gems.
Current Retail Value: Approximately $6,995
