Lot 3326 US SPRINGFIELD MODEL 1873 TRAPDOOR MOVIE PROP GUN.
Cal. 45-70. S# 370460. Bbl. 32 1/2". Rifle is a Model 1973 trapdoor Springfield modified to look like an early flint musket by the addition of a brass combination hammer which allows the rifle to function and fire 45-70 blanks. A solid cast brass frizzen and three brass barrel bands to resemble an early musket. The original sights were removed leaving only the stud at the muzzle. Buttstock is marked on the right side with large inverted letters "SELIG", which is a supplier of movie props to the film industry including the famous MGM lion. Walnut stock carries the standard steel buttplate and trigger guard. Original bands replaced by the brass type replacement ramrod. Sling swivels are present. CONDITION: stock shows the heavy wear, dents, scratches and staining expected from severe use in the movie industry and has notable missing chips on the toe and at the sides of the barrel. Large repaired crack forward of the lockplate. Metal has traces of a restored blue turning gray and patina with wear. Brass parts are turning patina with wear. Dark heavily oxidized bore with no visible rifling. PROVENANCE: From the PMRB Collection. (01-28429/RW). ANTIQUE. $500-700.
