^Lot 3322 U.S. SPRINGFIELD MODEL 1888 TRAPDOOR SINGLE SHOT

MILITARY RIFLE. Cal. 45-70. S# 518311. Bbl. 32 1/2". Barrel is marked on top over chamber with "I" and marked on the left side with "V / P / eagle's head / P". "R" marked Buffington ladder rear sight graduated to 2,000 yards. Blade front sight. Blade has been modified with solder to increase the height. The 1888 rifles are referred to as Rod Bayonet Springfields as the cleaning rod is configured to serve as a combination cleaning rod and bayonet. This rifle manufactured in 1891 carries its crisp boxed "SWP 1891" acceptance mark on the left side of stock and the encircled script "P" proof behind trigger guard tang. The rod bayonet is carried underneath the barrel and measures 35 1/2" overall. Breech block is marked "U.S. / MODEL / 1884". Lockplate has the spread wing "eagle" and "U.S. SPRINGFIELD" Three click tumbler. Two band walnut stock. Both bands carry stacking swivels. One piece trigger guard. Buttplate marked "U.S. CONDITION: stock has a moderately worn original finish with the scattered scratches and handling marks expected in a service rifle. Metal turning gray and patina with extensive areas of light oxidation and very fine pitting. Bore has strong sharp lands with a lightly frosted appearance throughout.
