Lot 3235 US M1840 CAVALRY SABER BY AMES DATED 1848.

A very nice example of a US M1840 cavalry saber by Ames measuring 43 1/2" overall with a plain 35 7/8" blade featuring a single large fuller and a secondary fuller near the spine. The ricasso is marked "N. P. AMES CABOTVILLE 1848" & "US WD". Brass hilt with standard two branch guard. Wire wrapped leather grip with a non-regulation leather sword knot attached. Iron scabbard with a darkened finish. CONDITION: fine blade with only scattered staining. Hilt is undamaged with a pleasing tarnish. Grip shows light wear and the knot shows moderate wear. Scabbard has an oxidised finish but no notable dents. PROVENANCE: Estate Collection of John "Jack" Dhooghe. (02-25558/BF). NON-GUN. $500-700.
