2 Copper & Brass Trench Art Letter Openers - Some Engraving and Dates - Letter openers are made from part of a copper "driving band" or "rotating band" which is incorporated near the end on an old artillery shell. It engages the grooves in the barrel and causes the projectile to spin in flight, providing better accuracy. They usually fall off just after exiting the barrel and therefore are often collected.
