Lot 54 Rare Marlin Model 1895 Lever Action Carbine

Rare Marlin Model 1895 Lever Action Carbine, #148388, .38-56 cal., 22'' round barrel, blue finish; smooth walnut forend and straight grip stock with sling swivels, ending with a crescent steel buttplate. Carbine blade front and ladder rear sight. No saddle ring or indications that the carbine ever had one, which per Marlin Firearms by Brophy is standard for a carbine ordered with sling swivels. Factory markings are clear with ''MARLIN SAFETY'' on top of the receiver. The number ''19'' is stamped into the bottom edge of the buttstock, between the lever and swivel. Mfg'd 1897. Carbine is in good overall condition, retaining traces of original finish, with the metal surfaces drifting to gray patina. Barrel and magazine show areas of light to moderate erosion with scuffs and scratches. Protected area of the rear ladder sight shows considerable bright nitre blue finish. Receiver displays traces of thinning finish, with edgewear, and evidence of cleaning, leaving scrapes and striations. A prior owner's name is etched into the left side, ''Lyall Wilson''. Hammer and lever assembly show silvered color case hardened finish. Stock is in very good condition, showing even wear, with indentations and a deeper impression on the right side of the butt. Buttplate is proud at the toe due to wood shrinkage and there are streaks of darker finish on both sides of the buttstock. Wood to metal fit is very good. Bottom of the forend with a 1'' crack at the tip. Action functions well and locks up securely. Bore is very good with light erosion and well-defined rifling. The Marlin Model 1895 was produced in modest numbers, with only approx. 18,000 produced from 1895-1915. It is estimated that only approx. 200 carbines were manufactured. Est.: $3,000-$4,000.
