Martially Marked Remington Model 1871 Rolling Block Army Pistol, Smoothbore Conversion, #2280, .50 CF cal., 8'' round barrel, blue and case hardened finish, walnut one-piece grip and forend, fixed blade front sight, with small ''V''-notched groove located on the breechblock. There are a ''P'' and ''S'' inspector's markings on the left side of the frame and it is marked in two-lines with makers information and ''April 17th 1866'' last patent date. ''CRS'' inspector's cartouche on the left grip. ''306'' is stamped on the grip below the front tang. Overall condition of this pistol is fine, displaying a silver/gray patina to the exposed portion of the barrel, with considerable finish under the forend. There are approx. 40% toning case colors visible on the frame & small parts plus traces of niter blue on the trigger. Grip was lightly sanded and revarnished, now with general light marks, the inspectors cartouche is light but legible. Action is crisp. Bore is very good, showing moderate wear, no erosion. Approx. 6,000 of these pistols were produced. It is believed that these smoothbore conversions were done by a few different commercial companies, to fire a shotshell type variation of the .50 CF cal.
