Lot 4473 REVOLUTIONARY WAR ERA PORTRAIT OF A BRITISH

INFANTRY OFFICER.This waist up view of a British Infantry Officer of the American Revolutionary War era has a sight size of 8 1/2" x 11" and a gold finished wooden frame that measures 14 1/2" x 12 1/2". The painting is done in the manner of Daniel Gardner who was active in London from about 1750-1805. The painting depicts a low ranking British officer with a single epaulet on a red coat with white facings. He also wears a white vest and holds his hat in his right hand. It is quite likely the officer is fresh from the field because there are several buttons missing on the front of his jacket. He is seated in a somewhat abstract landscape and looks to his left. CONDITION: the colors are quite fresh and vibrant and the skill of the painter is quite evident in the detailed depiction of this officer. The frame shows wear to the high points with some minor chipping. (02-26062/BF). NON-GUN. $1,200-1,600.
