Lot 4452 MID 16th CENTURY GERMAN MITTEN GAUNTLETS.
A fine matched pair of iron mitten gauntlets of German origin, possibly from Nuremberg. Each gauntlet is approx 10 1/2" in length and 5 1/4" at the peaked cuff. There are numerous brass rivets at the edge of the cuff with a gadrooned edge. There are five rivet hinged segments above the serrated knuckle bar and four rivet hinged segments below. The thumb piece is made from four plates riveted to leather and swivels on a hinge. CONDITION: iron has a lightly cleaned medium gray patina with scattered light pitting. The interior of the gauntlets have a more heavily oxidized appearance. PROVENANCE: Estate Collection of Nicholas Apergis. (02-24655/BF). NON-GUN. $1,500-2,000.
