Lot 4449 AN ENGLISH CROMWELLIAN PERIOD LOBSTERTAIL HELMET.
This mid 1600s English lobstertail helmet is typical of those worn during the mid 1600s when King Charles I was executed and Oliver Cromwell became Lord Protector of England. This helmet has a hinged visor with a three bar cage extending down. The crown has a raised medial ridge and the one piece tail has three faux segments. Both ear flaps are in place as are nearly all of the original rivets. There is a hole at the base of the tail for hanging the helmet. CONDITION: as expected, the helmet has a dark ancient patina but the visor hinges are loose and functioning. Interior of the helmet has a heavily oxidized finish as one would expect. PROVENANCE: Estate Collection of Nicholas Apergis. (02-24722/BF). NON-GUN. $2,000-3,000.
