Lot 4448 17TH CENTURY ITALIAN PIKEMAN ARMOR & HELMET.
A wonderful set of iron pikeman's armor from the 17th century likely of Italian origin. The breast plate is a single piece with two small hinged sideplates with buckles at the lower back area. Breast plate is lined with coarse woven material over burlap showing inked markings. Shoulder armor is made up of six plates each and lined in a similar manner. The skirt has a double row of six plates over three rows of single large wrap-around plates. The helmet is a cabasset forged in one piece with 10 rivets around the base and an additional two rivets in the plume holder. There is a small hole in the rim likely for hanging. The helmet is a bit light in weight and shows several dents. CONDITION: all pieces have a dark patina and show extensive wear from its nearly four centuries of existence. The linings are quite worn and threadbare but surprisingly complete. (02-24803/BF). NON-GUN. $3,000-5,000.
