Lot 4447 GERMAN OR ITALIAN CLOSED BURGONET HELMET.

A nice example of 16th or 17th century closed burgonet helmet of Germanic or Italian origin. The crown ridge has a simulated twisted cord edge as does the bottom of the eye slot and the top of the face shield. Both the eye shield plate and the lower face plate are hinged from the same rivet. The front and rear neck flange are separate and riveted. This is a very difficult helmet to date. It's patina on most parts is impeccable and pitting is abundant. Construction appears early but it is possible this helmet was "tuned up" in the Victorian era. We suggest you examine this helmet in person to form your own opinion. CONDITION: as stated, the patina is dark and there are areas of pitting throughout. The helmet is complete and all hinges function. A very visually impactful helmet. PROVENANCE: Estate Collection of Nicholas Apergis. (02-24753/.BF). $2,000-4,000.
