Lot 4428 18TH CENTURY EUROPEAN SILVER HILTED SMALLSWORD

WITH SCABBARD.A very attractive silver hilted smallsword of the 18th century measuring 38" overall with a plain 31 1/2" triangular cross-section blade. The original red felt washer is intact. Slightly oval delicately pierced guard with equally delicate pas d'ane below a heavily embellished cross guard and pendulous drop quillon. The knuckle bow and melon shaped pommel are also heavily embellished with crosshatching a wound cord motif. The top of the knuckle bow has hallmarks that look like a crowned "O', a crowned sword with "G", and a head. The four-sided grip is solid silver and also covered in crosshatching. The seldom seen scabbard has a punch decorated silver throat with a ring and a frog stud for suspension. The body of the scabbard is fish skin cover thin leather or papier-mache. The silver tip is missing. CONDITION: blade retains most of its original finish with very slight staining. Hilt shows light wear overall. Scabbard is solid with a few minor scuffs and scrapes.
