Lot 4418 FRENCH NAPOLEONIC ERA ROOSTER POMMEL SAPPERS

SWORD.This heavy and flamboyant sword is 35 1/4" overall with a 26 3/4" plain swept blade with a sawtooth spine. Heavy brass hilt with a monumental crossguard featuring lion head quillons. Between the two quillons are rectangular panels displaying the head of a lion. Plain integral grip with a particularly evocative crowing rooster head pommel. Gilded brass mounted leather scabbard with an elliptical frog's stud on the throat, just above crossed axes. The large 12" tip and drag features exceptionally elaborate repousse work on the front that includes crossed axes with a sword and various foliate motifs. CONDITION: blade has an overall light gray clean patina. Entire hilt has a mellow mustard patina. Scabbard mounts retain approx 30% of their original gilded finish. Leather is dried and flaked but remains solid. (02-25835/BF). NON-GUN. $1,500-2,500.
