Lot 4417 FRENCH OFFICER'S MAMELUKE.
This ornate French mameluke measures 41" overall with a 31 1/4" highly curved blade featuring a 1 3/4" clipped point. The single fullered blade is etched with various foliate motifs and includes a spray of arms on each side. Gilded brass hilt with a face medallion in the center of the guard dividing two lion head quillons. The backstrap is vine decorated with a classic mameluke grip. The brown leather scabbard is possibly a replacement but retains an original ornately decorated throat and center mount. The tip/drag fits well, but is a non-matching replacement. CONDITION: blade has been heavily cleaned which has rendered some of the etching difficult to see. The hilt shows light wear overall as do the scabbard mounts. Scabbard body is a bit soft to hold a stiff shape. PROVENANCE: Estate Collection of Nicholas Apergis. (02-24737/BF). NON-GUN. $700-1,000.
