Lot 4412 17th - 18th CENTURY EUROPEAN HALBERD.
An ornate example of an early European halberd, likely of Germanic origin. The overall length is about 73 1/2" including its square haft with chamfered edges. The head is 17 1/2' in height and 11 1/2" in width. The spike measures 8 5/8" and the blade measures 4 5/8" from top to bottom. The blade is decorated with crosses and dot decoration. At the base of the spike is a large armor's mark that appears to be a castle with "MGF". The beak has a single cross and the chiseled letters "MK". The languets are about 7 1/4" with three rivets or nails on each of the four sides. The haft shows age but may not be the original for this early head. CONDITION: as expected the head has a dark ancient patina and appears to have been remounted several times. The current haft definitely shows use and also has a dark patina. PROVENANCE: Estate Collection of Nicholas Apergis. (02-24743/BF). NON-GUN. $800-1,400.
