Lot 4405 BRITISH VICTORIAN ERA PRESENTATION RIFLE OFFICER'S
SWORD.This ornate presentation sword measures 39 1/2" overall with a heavily engraved 32 1/2" blade. The etching on the blade combines foliate and geometric motifs with a spray of British Arms and a crowned "VR". Engraving further includes a 9" panel that reads "PRESENTED TO CAPTN J. RICHARDS. BY THE NON COMMISSIONED OFFICERS AND PRIVATES, OF THE 3RD COMPANY, OF THE 2ND MONMOUTH (ABERSYCHAN) RIFLE VOLUNTEERS AUGUST, 1863.". The ricasso is marked "MAPPIN, BROTS London Bridge.". Exceptionally ornate silver basket hilt with a plethora of pierced foliate motifs along with a crowned rifleman's horn. Fluted backstrap and pommel with some feathering highlights a copper wire wraped light shark skin grip. There is a black and bullion sword knot attached. The scabbard as a nickeled body, drag and throat with two ornate foliated silver mounts. CONDITION: blade has a medium gray patina and etching remains quite clear. Hilt shows generally light wear as does the grip, knot and scabbard. (02-25840/BF). NON-GUN. $800-1,200.
