Lot 4401 SCARCE BRITISH EAST INDIA COMPANY OFFICER'S
SPADROON.A seldom seen British sword of the East India Company measuring 36 1/2" overall with a 30 1/4" blade featuring a central 8 1/4" fuller that reads in the valley "XX ARNOLDT XX BRACH XX SOLINGEN XX" on one side and "XX ARNOLDT XX BRACH XX ME FECIT XX" on the other. The hilt is gilded brass with a plain crossguard and drop quillon. The knuckle bow is a five ball design with a lanyard ring at the top. A faceted pillow pommel topped the reeded bone grip. The center of the grip has a gilded brass band with an oval on the front bearing the lion of the British East India Company. It is quite likely that this is an earlier family blade utilized by an officer of the EIC as a tribute to his ancestors. No scabbard. CONDITION: blade has a mottled gray patina. The hilt retains a substantial amount of its original gilded finish. The grip has a few tight age cracks from drying. (02-26068/BF). NON-GUN. $1,000-1,500.
