Lot 4399 BRITISH PATTERN 1803 INFANTRY OFFICER'S SABER.

This well made Georgian saber measures 34 1/2" overall with a heavily swept plain 29" blade. Gilded brass hilt with ornate eight hole guard. The knuckle bow features a crown "GR" below a medallion encompassing a silver infantry horn. The top of the knuckle bow is fitted with a lanyard ring below where it enters the mouth of the lion head pommel. The top half of the backstrap forms the lion's mane and the bottom half is five sided. The ferrule has incised lines above and below and the wire wrapped grip is made of fine shark skin. Gilded brass mounted leather scabbard featuring both carrying rings and frog stud at the top of the mount. The throat is marked "Tatham to his Majesty N.37.CHARING CROSS NEAR THE ADMIRALTY". CONDITION: blade has a cleaned, lightly mottled finish. Hilt generally shows light wear with majority of the original gilding remaining. Scabbard mounts retain about 15% of the original gilding.
