Lot 4394 ITALIAN SWEPT HILT RAPIER IN THE STYLE OF PIETRO
HERNANDEZ.This exquisite Italian swept hilt rapier was likely produced in the early to mid 1800s in the style of Pietro Hernandez. The rapier measures 50" overall with a signed blade measuring 42" to the base of the guard. The blade has a central 9 1/2" fuller with "PIETRO HERNANDEZ" stamped in the valley. Absolutely stunning silver inlayed iron hilt featuring a 4 branch guard adorned by 4 inlayed silver heads and numerous sections of vines. The 9 1/2" crossguard, as well as the 3 branch knuckle bow, are also inlayed with silver vines. The huge globular pommel features more vines and a large, artistically impressive, inlayed silver head of a bearded and mustached man. Iron wire wrapped grip with Turk's head knots both top and bottom. CONDITION: blade shows mottled gray patina with light wear. Hilt has a dark patina that contrasts superbly with the silver inlays. Grip shows light wear. Even though this exquisite weapon was made 200 years after Hernandez was active, is must rank as one of the finest examples of the sword smith's art.
