Lot 4393 RARE 15TH TO 16TH CENTURY VENETIAN SCHIAVONESCA.
A rare example of a 15th to 16th century Venetian schiavonesca measuring 38 1/2" overall with a plain 31 5/8" double edged blade featuring two 26" fullers. The schiavonesca is the predecessor of the well known schiavona and is considered quite a rare find. The hilt has the ditinctive heavy S shaped guard and large flattened square pommel with a raised center. Two heavy iron crown shaped ferrules terminate the dark wood grip that is decorated with 2 vertical twisted brass wires on each side. CONDITION: the cleaned blade shows light to moderate pitting. Hilt has a wonderful dark patina with light surface pitting. The wood grip is solid and the high points of the wire are worn flat. PROVENANCE: Estate Collection of Nicholas Apergis. (02-24729/BF).
