Lot 4364 CASED PAIR OF A. HOLLY CONTEMPORARY FLINTLOCK

PISTOLS. Both: Cal. 45. NSN. Art Holly was an early builder of contemporary flintlock rifles and pistols who worked first in California and later Michigan. Research suggests that he passed away in the late 1960s. 1) Bbl. 10" with a 3 5/8" octagon shank transitioning to a fluted forward portion and returning to octagon configuration at the muzzle. Bbl. measures 13/16" across the flats. Dovetail mounted brass blade front sight with fixed V-notch rear sight. Top flat is engraved "A Holly". Trade style lock is apparently antique with partially visible markings that read "H.W. DE????/ & Co.". Plain trigger. Wedge fastened maple stock with forward sweeping rnd. butt. German silver fittings include oval shaped key wedges with oval shaped wedges in sideplate area, arrowhead shaped wrist plate, along with small decorative wedges on both sides of forearm and wrist, with larger decorative plates along the curved portion of the butt. Silver finished nose cap, thimble, and single pipe holding a iron tipped hardwood ramrod. Brass trigger guard. CONDITION: bbl. and lock retain over 70% browned finish showing areas of remaining pitting on lockplate with a crack through the pan area. Stock has good finish. Functioning lock. Bore shows spots of light pitting retaining strong rifling. 2) Bbl. 8 3/8" octagon to rnd. with a faceted transition. Top flat is engraved "A Holly". Dovetail mounted brass blade front sight with fixed U-notch rear sight. Unmarked trade style lock. Wedge fastened rnd. butt stock of fancy curly maple. Engraved brass trigger guard has an acorn finial. Engraved silver finished fittings include pierced back strap and butt cap plate, wrist plates, sideplate escutcheons,oval wedge escutcheons, and nose cap. Hardwood ramrod is held by an engraved acorn finial thimble and single pipe. CONDITION: bbl. and lock retain over 70% lightly faded browned finish. Stock finish shows small marks. Functioning lock. Bore shows small spots of pitting and retains strong rifling. UNATTACHED ACCESSORIES: 19 1/4" x 11 3/4" x 4 7/8" converted ornate mahogany silverware case with added green felt lined fitted interior. Case contains small pewter powder flask, glass oil bottle, small brass funnel, a horn handled patch knife, rattle snake carved powder measure, fourteen 50 caliber rnd. balls, and 2 spare flints.
