Lot 4304 HIGH QUALITY & CONDITION FLINTLOCK GREAT COAT
PISTOL BY S&C SMITH OF LONDON. Cal. 58. S# 3441 (on trigger guard bow). This fine pistol measures 11-1/4" overall and has 6" round damascus barrel engraved "S&C Smith London" (working ca 1790-1831) on top. A "U" notch rear sight is dovetailed through patent breech with platinum touch hole and band at rear. Case hardened breech iron is scroll engraved. Lock with flat plate is fitted with high breasted serpentine cock with back sliding safety, beautifully sculpted full waterproof pan, bridled roller frizzen with roller on feather spring that has bulbous finial with teat. Lock is engraved with maker's name at center and some scroll. "Patent" "3441" (use #) is in front of cock. Plain European walnut stock with checkered bag grip extends to muzzle and attaches to barrel with captive side bolt through oval silver escutcheons. Bright blue trigger guard with pineapple finial is engraved wth S# (3441) on bow flanked by some scroll. Original greenheart ramrod with horn tip mounts into beaded steel thimble. UNATTACHED ACCESSORIES: photocopy of auction listing for this item at Amoskeag Auction dated 11/30/13. CONDITION: very fine. Barrel retaining most of its damascus pattern with some cleaned patches of rust. A good amount of original light case hardening color remains on lock and breech iron. Nearly all temper blue remains on feather spring and about 80% original bright blue remains on furniture. Stock retains nearly all of its original finish with a few minor marks.
