Lot 4300 ATTRACTIVE ENGLISH SCREW BARREL FLINTLOCK MUFF

PISTOL, BY MANTON & SON. Cal. 45 Smoothbore. NSN. Bbl. 2 15/16". Screw bbl. flintlock muff pistol produced by Manton & Son of London, England. Left receiver plated is engraved with a panoply of arms surmounting a banner reading "JNo MANTON" followed by an oval with a approx. 140 degree "& SON". Right side of receiver is engraved with a panoply of arms surmounting a banner that reads "DOVER STRT LONDON", with a foliate and dagger motif engraved on the left side at the breech area. Underside of receiver is marked with 3 British proofs, followed by an engraved foliate wreath pattern surrounding the folding trigger. Sides of hammer and flash pan exhibit additional foliate engraving, with a heart and decorative border engraved on the front face of the frizzen. Nearly fully checkered wood stock features a rectangular escutcheon on the rear of the wrist depicting a 3-headed hydra followed by an apparent dragon head. Center hammer action with sliding safety plate. CONDITION: metal components have faded to a mottled gray patina, showing scattered handling marks and spots of age related discoloration. Bbl. exhibits some scattered pitting and dings/impressions. Proper manual mechanics, with hammer holding at half-cock. Stock is very good overall, with some scattered handling marks and minor impressions. An attractive Manton & Son muff pistol. (01-26959/MLW). ANTIQUE. $500-800.
