Lot 4285 DURS EGG SILVER MOUNTED FLINTLOCK HOLSTER PISTOL.
Cal. 65. S# NSN. Durs Egg born in Switzerland, emigrated to England in the 1760's and worked for Henry Nock until he went on his own in 1772. The quality of his work was amongst the very best in the London trade. This second quality pistol has 9" ovate barrel with top flat gold inlaid "D. EGG, LONDON,". Touch hole is gold and two gold lines are around breech end. Breech iron is traditionally engraved with arms and flowers. Lock with chamfered plate and rebated tail is fitted with serpentine cock having back sliding safety, semi-waterproof integral pan, bridled friction frizzen and feather spring with bulbous finial. Lock is engraved with flowers and feathers; "D. Egg" is under pan. Full stock with horn tip has bag grip checkered with large diamonds; each with four punch dots. Unhallmarked silver mounts include rounded grip caps and well shaped trigger guards with bouquet finials. Mounts are engraved with arms and flowers. Stock attaches to barrel with two captive side bolts without escutcheons. Walnut ramrod with horn tip mounts through beaded pipe and horn thimble. CONDITION: good as refinished. Barrel with nearly all rebrown. Lock cleaned to silver gray. Stock with shiny oil refinish has some loss of detail. Silver is lightly rubbed. Scratch rifled bore is good; lightly pitted.
