Lot 4282 HUMONGOUS BRITISH STYLE PERCUSSION RAMPART GUN
CONVERTED FROM FLINTLOCK AND POWDER HORN. Cal. 4 bore .970 Cal. S# NSN. This 18th century big gun has undoubtedly seen plenty of use and abuse over the years. It has 50" tapered round barrel with tin ramrod pipes affixed to original full stock mounts. Some very deep proofs are on breech end. Percussion conversion was done by fitting new breech plug with large nipple to breech iron. Lock (originally flint) measures almost 9" and has arched flat plate with some engraving. A hand forged very large percussion hammer is fitted. European walnut stock with mouldings around lock and sideplate has other early features including handrail comb. Brass mounts include 7" tall heavy buttplate with 7" top tang of steeple shape, trigger guard with flame finial, large flat serpentine sideplate and unmarked crest plate at top of grip. A hand forged mounting yoke is bolted through forend. Stock attaches to barrel with heavy sheet brass band driven on. Ramrod is missing. Horn measures 24" from tip to butt, however it measures 39" following the curve of this massive horn. The 9-sided carved spout measures 2 1/2" in length. The butt has a domed wooden cap that averaged 5" in diameter. The horn is undecorated. CONDITION: fair. Iron and steel parts with dark brown pitted patina. Stock with old finish has many cracks, bumps and dents. Butt portion shows considerable rot and has been stabilized a long time ago with some resin. Bore is dark and pitted. Lock does work. Bottom screw is missing from buttplate. The horn is solid with minor insect damage.
