Cal. 54. NSN. Bbl. 48" octagon measuring 7/8" across flats at the muzzle. German silver blade front with fixed V notch German silver rear sight. Antique bbl. & antique trade style lock are unmarked. Contemporary full length Roman nose stock of fine maple. Stock is held by 4 wedges and ornate line engraved escutcheons of German silver. Right side of stock has a very fancy pierced & segmented daisy finial rectangular lid patch box. Lid is engraved "William P. Bankard". Balance is lightly engraved with floral, geometric & line engraving. Other pierced & segmented fitting with comparable engraving consist of the cheekpiece plate, right side heel plate, toe plate and side plate. Additional German silver fitting include the crescent buttplate, and ornate finger curl trigger guard. Pierced double set triggers of German silver are also contemporary. Faceted German silver thimble & 2 faceted pipes hold the hardwood ramrod. appear to be antique from an original rifle. Weight 8 lbs, 14.6 oz. CONDITION: original antique bbl. & lock have a partially cleaned brown appearance showing wear & light pitting. Bore is dark & pitted near the muzzle showing some remaining rifling. Modern stock & fittings retain very good finish. Lock will not hold in cocked position unless the trigger is set. (01-27930/DS). ANTIQUE. $3,500-5,500.
