^Lot 4218 RARE EXCAVATED SUTLER'S TOKEN FOR THE 6TH MAINE

BATTERY.A very rare excavated sutler's token from the 6th Maine battery of the Civil War found at Charlestown, West Virginia. The obverse of the token features a central " 5 " surrounded by the words " GOOD FOR CENTS " surrounding the 5. The name " KOEHLER " appears at the base, likely the die sinker that made the token. The reverse reads " C. W. BANGS. 6TH. ME . BATTERY (star). Only a handful of these rare tokens are known to survive with non-excavated examples valued at between $5000 and $8000.
