^Lot 4216 RARE JACK HAYS CDV & SIGNED CHECK.

CDV of late 1850s view of Hays with Anthony NY backmark, circa 1864-1866 with tax stamp. San Francisco check signed by "John C. Hays / sheriff" in 1851. John Coffee "Jack" Hays (1817-1883) was among the most famous of early Texas personalities. He was captain of the original Texas Rangers, led Republic of Texas Army into Mexico in 1842, Comanche War in Texas, Mexican War, Indian agent, sheriff of San Francisco, US Surveyor General of California, commanded militia in Nevada before Civil War. Jack Hays did it all, retiring to Oakland CA as one of the original settlers, becoming wealthy as a savvy businessman in buying and selling land. CONDITION: both check and CDV are very good as archivally framed, the check has PGCS authentication slab grading it extremely fine, ex-John Ford collection. (02-25594/JS). NON-GUN. $1,500-2,500.
