Lot 4205 FEDERAL PERIOD US MILITIA INFANTRY UNIFORM.
This early militia uniform is red and dark blue wool harkening back to the earliest military uniforms of the United States. This uniform dates from the late 1820s to the early 1840s. It is constructed of blue wool with a red wool plastron, collar, tails, cuffs and pocket flap lining. The collar has three rows of silver tape bullion and a similar bullion is at the shoulder to secure the epaulets. The bottom of the tails have diamond decorations edged with a similar silver bullion. Buttons are silver 21mm eagle "I" buttons with a back mark that reads "SUPERIOR * QUALITY *". The buttons on the front have red cording extending from each button to the center. There are eighteen buttons on the front, two on the collar, twelve on the tail and four on each cuff. The cuffs also have red cording as used on the front of the uniform. The rear pocket flaps are highlighted with black cording. The interior has a partial cotton muslin lining that covers the front and tails, but not the back. There is an interior pocket in one tail and the sleeves are lined in slightly lighter cotton. CONDITION: uniform shows some minor moth damage and the collar bullion is a bit frayed at the top with one separation. The buttons are complete and most show some original silver plating.
