Lot 4204 EARLY TO MID 1800s MASSACHUSETTS MILITIA COATEE.

A visually attractive Massachusetts uniform that dates from the early 1830s to the late 1840s. The uniform is gray-blue wool with black facings on the cuffs, tails and collar. The collar also has two double rows of flat gold bullion on each side. The same bullion forms the securing straps for the epaulets. The gilded buttons are early two piece Massachusetts Volunteer Militia with R&W Robinson back marks. There are ten large buttons down the front and two at each collar. There are an additional ten large buttons on the tail (one missing). There are four cuff size buttons on each cuff and two at the shoulder for the epaulets. The cuffs have flat gold bullion decorations around the buttons as do the larger buttons on the tail. The base of the tail has two finely done flaming bombs in gold bullion. The lining is a patterned material that may be a cotton/wool blend. The collar is lined with heavy muslin cotton with a coarsely woven under fabric. CONDITION: the uniform itself shows some staining and a few moth nips. The lining is a bit degraded particularly on the edges but is substantially intact and would benefit greatly from some minor restoration. (02-26080/BF). NON-GUN. $1,500-2,000.
