Lot 4195 9TH CAV. INSCRIBED US M1860 CAVALRY SABER.

"J.D. BURK.", "34" & "A 9 CAV" Stamped onto the brass hilt & guard appears to indicate this sword belonged to J.D. Burk, #34 of A Troop 9th Cavalry Regiment of the US Army. This regiment was 1 of 4 African-American Regiments known as the "Buffalo Soldiers" that saw action in the Indian Wars. This saber measures 41" overall with a 34 1/4" plain blade. The ricasso is marked " US / WB /1864". Standard brass 2 branch hilt with a wire wrapped leather grip. Iron scabbard. CONDITION: blade has gray patina appearance with scattered nicks on edge & scratches. Brass appears solid with mustard patina & sm. dents. Leather shows large piece missing with cracking; wiring appears tight. Scabbard has dark patina with white paint spots & sm. dents. PROVENANCE: Estate Collection of Nicholas Apergis.
