Lot 4191 LATE 19th CENTURY GIRAL FOLDING BELT KNIFE.
This interesting knife looks like a small heavy handled Bowie knife that is worn on the belt in a leather scabbard. In actuality, it is a folding knife of ingenious design. When folded, the knife measures 10 7/8" and when extended it measures 14 1/4". The entire blade is nearly 10" long with a 3 1/4" clipped point. The spine of the blade is marked "GIRAL A BAYONNE" indicating manufacture by the Bayonne Knife Company of New Jersey. The handle/grip is somewhat typical of a folding knife with a steel ferrule and pommel featuring a two piece horn grip attached with two steel pins. There is a lanyard ring release at the top of the ferrule and a German silver release button in the center of the front grip. The leather sheath measures 7 1/4" with a plated silver throat that has a mushroom frog stud and a lightly decorated silver plated tip. CONDITION: blade has a pleasing gray patina with some light staining. Iron parts of the hilt have a similar patina. Grips are undamaged. Sheath is solid with a few minor dents to the tip. (02-25890/BF). NON-GUN. $500-800.
