Lot 4181 RARE EDWARD OWENS, ALBANY NY MADE ANTEBELLUM BOWIE
KNIFE CARRIED BY US ARMY SURGEON. Edward Owens (1809-1862) was an obscure surgical tool maker in Albany, NY, working circa 1850. Very few of his surgical tools are known and only 2 knives. This fine bowie was carried by Bvt. Lt. Colonel T. C. Henry (1825-1877) during the Civil War as surgeon. Knife & sheath are pictured & described on page 233 of James Johnston's "ACCOUTREMENTS IV". Knife is 13.25" overall, 9" clip point blade, .28" thick, 3.5" sharpened clip, full tang. 'EDWARD OWENS / ALBANY-NY" stamped lightly on ricasso and boldly lengthwise with 2 cryptic marks, steel 3" sculpted "S" shaped cross guard, horizontal fluted ivory slab handle, leather sheath has silver throat and integral belt loop. CONDITION: knife is fine, blade bright with sharpening, stained, handle has several hairlines and ivory patina. Sheath is in matching condition. PROVENANCE: James R. Johnston collection.
