Lot 4169 EXCELLENT CONFEDERATE STATES ARMORY, KENANSVILLE

ARTILLERY CUTLASS & ORIGINAL TIN MOUNTED SHEATH. All the characteristics of fine bowie made at Louis Froelich's Confederate States Armory in Kenansville, NC. 21" overall, 15 7/8" double edged blade, 1.75" wide, .25" thick. Heavy sheet iron D-guard, 3.5" oval crossguard, 7/8" wide knuckle bow, flattened round walnut handle, leather sheath retains tin throat and tip. This is about as good as these knives come, few retain the original scabbard tip. UNATTACHED ACCESSORIES: copies of pertinent pages from "CONFEDERATE BOWIE KNIVES" showing this pattern and details of manufacture. CONDITION: very good overall, iron patina, hand worn wood patina, sheath is sound with 2 initials carved "WA", belt loop attached to throat is torn off, scabbard shrunk and doesn't fit all the way leaving .5" gap.
