Lot 4159 OWEN POWELL RETAILED ADAMS' PATENT DOUBLE ACTION

REVOLVER WITH CASE & ACCESSORIES. Cal. 34. S# 29286R. Bbl. 4 3/8". Adams' Patent double action revolver mfg. by Robert Adams (as per the "R" S# prefix). Top strap of the frame and bbl. are engraved with the retailer "OWEN POWELL. 59, HIGH ST, T SHEFFIELD". Right side of the frame is engraved "B13,622./ ADAMS' PATENT. 29,286R". Upper left quarter flat of the octagonal bbl. is marked with a British Crown/GP and Crown/V proofs, which are repeated around the circumference of the cyl. Sides of frame feature engraved double line borders with areas of foliate scroll engraving, which extends to the trigger guard bow, grip strap, grip tang, and oval pommel cap. Double line border engraving extends to each facet of the octagonal bbl., terminating in a band of decorative engraving at the muzzle. Loading lever, grip, and pommel screw heads are engraved with foliate motifs. Metal components exhibit a high polish blue finish overall, save for on the hammer, which is polished in-the-white. Frame is mounted with a 1-piece checkered wood wrap around grip. Dovetailed blade front sight with integral frame V-notch rear sight. Left side of frame/bbl. features a Kerr's patent loading lever. Matching S# "29286R" is present on the frame and cyl. Frame, cyl., trigger guard, loading lever, rear grip tang, and grip are matching via the assembly # "742". UNATTACHED ACCESSORIES: contemporary wood case featuring a brown felt lining and containing a brass C&JW Hawksley powder flask, nickel oiler, an unmarked 2-cell brass bullet mold, unmarked wood and brass cleaning rod, as well as a cloth percussion cap pouch. One side of the pouch exhibits a label denoting mfg. by Eley Bros., with an label on the obverse side that appears to read "Made exprefsly for/ ADAMS'/ PATENT REVOLVER.". CONDITION: frame/bbl. retains the majority of its original blue finish, exhibiting some areas of pitting on the sides and on the interior of the frame, most notably around the top strap. Trigger guard has mostly faded to a mottled gray/brown appearance, with some areas of mild surface oxidation. Hammer retains a bright appearance, exhibiting some spots of age related discoloration. Bore is relatively bright, exhibiting scattered spots and patches of mild to moderate pitting, while retaining good 3-groove rifling throughout. Action is out of time, with the hammer not holding when cocked and the trigger not resetting when pulled. Grip shows some superficial marks and impressions from handling and storage, but otherwise remains very good overall. Display case is very good overall. (01-28661/MLW). ANTIQUE. $2,000-3,000.
