Lot 4091 RARE CIVIL WAR NAVY ISSUED COLT MODEL 1860 FLUTED
ARMY REVOLVER. Cal. 44. S# 6381. Colt's new army revolver made to replace the dragoon were made concurrently with the last dragoons in 1860. This revolver was shipped to US Navy Yard on June 8, 1861. Standard configuration, 8" barrel, 1-line New York US America address, 4 screw frame made for shoulder stock & fluted cylinder with patent marking in one flute. Cylinder interestingly has two sets of S#s on back of cylinder 5320 & 6381, which is explained by Charles Pate, author of the definitive text on model 1860 army revolvers: "The pistol numbered 5320 was shipped to the Army's New York Arsenal on 5/21/1861. It is likely that Colt replaced the fluted cylinder of pistol #5320 with a round cylinder and then used the fluted cylinder on pistol #6381, for at least one other pistol is just like it. #5327 (in the same Army shipment) has fluted cylinder #6454 (in the same Navy shipment). This is a very honest navy purchased revolver early in Civil War. CONDITION: very good overall, appears complete & original, all matching serial numbers including wedge and arbor, no S# seen on grips, markings very good, no finish, metal smooth mottled gray/plum patina. Cylinder has 5 of 6 functional safety pins. Mechanics are crisp, good rifled bore. (01-28195/JS). ANTIQUE. $3,000-4,000.
